Regional biological loops

We will create innovative solutions for companies' reuse and processing of organic residual raw material, and add value to what is little valued in the market today, so that new products are produced in the region. The new economy, in all industries, must move from the linear to the circular, with maximum utilisation of available raw materials, less waste, less emissions, and work together for a common sustainable future. Bioregion Institute is leading the way in the coming years based on design-driven innovation methodology and the opportunity that has arisen in the broad insight work in the early phase project Bioregion Vestland and interdisciplinary collaboration with 25 business participants, universities and public institutions. Biomass waste from industry in Western Norway was mapped and raw material collaboration was initiated with a number of companies. The available raw materials can be used to make substitutes for oil-based plastic products. Some solutions exist, but none have yet been scaled up in Norway. Development of products and production chains will strengthen green jobs and companies in transition in the region. As designers, we are responsible for the footprint of everything that is produced as 80% of the climate impact in a product or building is decided in the design phase. Therefore, we must be drivers for change in the industry and initiate the production of attractive and good degradable materials and products. Interdisciplinary collaboration and research are required to solve complex issues that arise in the transition to a circular production. BiOi uses inclusive design methods in interdisciplinary collaboration.

BiOi works continuously with mapping of the entire supply chain and will be a player that takes responsibility for comprehensive interdisciplinary cross-industry collaboration for innovation and new circular models. BiOi will also initiate and deliver cutting-edge innovation projects in collaboration with industry and business needs. BiOi activates new networks of knowledge, large and small companies, research and exploration environments and is now in dialogue with several companies that handle organic waste in the region and business actors with residual raw materials in their production, for the development of collaborative projects based on fish sludge from farming and silage, micro and macro-algae, low value wool, blood and wood. Bioregion Institute, is an ideal AS founded by the design studio Ralston Bau, Kaleidoscope Nordic Arkitekter, Rå design Studio and fashion designer Siv Støldal, with a partnership agreement with PWC. The Bioregion Institute's core activity is to counteract waste, to develop biomaterials and products from organic residual raw materials, which can replace fossil plastics. We are in close dialogue with research institutions in Bergen (such as UiB Chemistry) and internationally (Materiom, UK and R.I.S.E. in Sweden) that research substances that can be used in the solutions. Researchers are linked to specific projects, designers and stakeholders who together explore, prototype and develop new materials with properties adapted to their intended use.

Several core activities are developed in parallel at the Bioregion Institute and complement each other:

Biocircular Lab
Material R&D and product development with internships by researchers (also in companies).

Bioregion Bank
Knowledge database on bioorganic raw materials (chemical topics), transformation and production.

Residual raw material exchange
Platform for buying and selling organic residual raw materials and tracking.

Circular Spin-off
Inclusive design methodology and further development from idea to solution proposal and prototyping.
